Role: Leadership and Learning Advisor

Industry: Healthcare

Organization: Kingston General Hospital, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, employs approximately 4500 employees with about 225 of them in leadership roles. The organization consists of a main campus with 500 beds and 7 satellite sites. In addition, they are a teaching hospital affiliated with Queen’s University and train post-graduate students and conduct clinical research.

Current Situation: All of their leaders have access to the Vado courses mapped to the Ontario Hospital Association’s Employee and Physician Experience survey and OHA’s Competency Assessment Questionnaire. Each year as part of the professional development planning process, leaders review the KGH leadership competencies and identify organizational and personal areas for further development. Contributing to this process would be identifying training and development opportunities and the Vado courses are a very specific, measurable and accountable way to contribute to their development.

Appel’s Comments: HR advisers have found the courses particularly helpful when they are working with an employee to positively change workplace conduct and behaviour. Employees are able to use the printable action guides and job aids as evidence of their work and leaders are able to use these to guide performance discussions as well.

Our leaders have commented that they like that there are options within many different developmental areas for employees and that courses are behaviour based. For each leadership competency, there are at least 5 courses to choose from so that leaders can be specific about taking actions to further develop a particular competency.

The printable and saveable job aids that support the behaviour based actions are also a valuable feature.
